BIO:

Andres Montenegro was born in Lima, Peru and moved to Florida in 2004. He began working with clay at Seminole State College and graduated with a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Central Florida in 2016.

In May 2019 Andres received his MFA from Bowling Green State University, specializing in three dimensional studies in ceramics, and sculpture. During his MFA studies Andres taught his first college level classes. Teaching college level for the first time, he realized working with clay and teaching was a two part passion.

After graduating, Andres has been working as a Ceramics Adjunct Professor at Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, and at Jane’s Art Center in New Smyrna FL. He sells his work locally and nationally through his online store sales, and galleries.

He currently resides in Daytona Beach, Florida.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Since before civilization, rituals and the artifacts that take part in them have been a driving force for humans to pursue meaning and survival. The legends and history these traditions carry, provide me with a link to these ancestral cultures. In this link I find the opportunity to create my own ceramic artifacts and vessels. My work is influenced by ancient pre-columbian civilizations, early 20th century Mingei ceramics, and contemporary American ceramics. My Peruvian heritage presents itself in the form of nostalgia, and awe to the historic legacy left by cultures like Chavin and Nazca. From them I borrow their deities, rituals, and landscapes, and I integrate them with modern ceramics to create my pieces. I make my functional work with the intent to elevate the dialogue between what, and how we consume. The tradition of sharing meals is a ritual itself, but culturally it has been made less relevant over time. My vessels ask for our attention with their color, form and motifs, which gears our senses back into what we are eating or drinking. This consideration lets us appreciate on new layers the simple act of consuming food, and sharing it with others.
